What exactly is a Baroque Pinto?

A Baroque Pinto is a striking horse breed created by crossing Friesian horses with pinto-colored warmblood breeds, resulting in a black-and-white horse characterized by a baroque physique. It typically has 25–40% Friesian blood, sometimes combined with other breeds like Andalusians or Lipizzaners. Baroque Pintos have a strong, square body, a high-carried muscular neck, broad chest, and lush mane and tail with feathering on the legs.

Known for their friendly, balanced temperament, and willingness to learn, they are versatile horses suitable for dressage, driving, riding, and leisure work. They have an expressive, swinging gait with high knee action, making them stand out in the show ring and competitions. Their distinctive pinto coat pattern and baroque style make them visually impressive and popular in various equestrian disciplines. The breed originated in the Netherlands in the 1950s and is now mainly bred in Western Europe and the United States.

Height ranges typically from about 150 to 168 cm (14.3 to 16.2 hands), with a preference for at least 156 cm. The Baroque Pinto combines the elegance and charisma of Friesian horses with the colorful pinto pattern and versatility of warmblood types, making it a noble and all-round horse species.

What does it mean if a stallion is homozygous tobiano AND black?

If a stallion like Sir Ludwig is homozygous for tobiano and black, all his foals will have the tobiano pattern and carry the black gene. The mare's color genes influence the exact base color, so foals may be bay tobiano or brown tobiano. However, a chestnut (fuchs) foal is impossible because Sir Ludwig passes on black genes only.
